Which type of compressed air piping is best suited for your facility?
In industrial production, compressed-air piping is an indispensable and critical component, responsible for conveying compressed air from the compressor to various points of use and powering a wide range of pneumatic tools and equipment. Selecting the appropriate type of compressed-air piping is essential for ensuring efficient plant operations and safe production. This article provides a professional analysis of the different types of compressed-air piping to help you make a more informed choice.
I. PVC Pipe
PVC piping is widely favored for its low cost and ease of installation and use. However, over prolonged service, it is susceptible to the oil content and heat in compressed air, which can cause the material to become brittle, crack, or even shatter. Moreover, when subjected to pressure, PVC pipes may disintegrate due to sharp fragments carried by the airflow, posing a potential safety hazard to the plant. Consequently, although PVC piping represents a cost-effective initial investment, its long-term reliability and safety are suboptimal.
II. Galvanized Pipes
Galvanized pipes are commonly used in water distribution and general piping systems, as their zinc coating provides resistance to moisture in compressed air. However, over time, the coating may flake off and enter the conveyed air stream, causing severe damage to components such as pneumatic cylinders and tools. Flaking zinc particles can also adversely affect construction quality. Therefore, galvanized pipes are not suitable for use in compressed-air systems.
III. Clarinet
Black steel pipe is one of the commonly used pipe types in compressed air systems, offering advantages such as robustness, durability, and ease of installation. However, since black steel pipe lacks an internal coating for corrosion protection, it is susceptible to moisture-induced rusting. Although aftercoolers and dryers can help control moisture levels, they cannot completely eliminate the risk of rust. Moreover, the installation of black steel pipe systems is time-consuming, which may increase overall project costs.
IV. Stainless Steel Pipes
Stainless steel pipe offers significant advantages in corrosion resistance, combining the strength and durability of black steel pipe while eliminating the problem of rust. It is also relatively easy to install and highly durable over the long term. However, its higher cost may increase the initial investment burden. Nevertheless, when considering long-term operating and maintenance expenses, stainless steel pipe remains cost-effective.
V. New-Type Aluminum Alloy Pipes
In recent years, new-generation aluminum alloy pipes have emerged as a promising solution in the field of compressed air piping. These pipes offer numerous advantages, including superior safety and corrosion resistance, low installation costs, and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The dense alumina protective oxide film that forms on their surface effectively prevents further oxidation and corrosion of the underlying aluminum, making them suitable for a wide range of operating environments. In addition, aluminum alloy pipes exhibit excellent thermal conductivity and lightweight characteristics, which facilitate transportation and installation. Consequently, these innovative aluminum alloy pipes are among the ideal choices for factory compressed air piping systems.
VI. Recommendations for Selection
When selecting compressed air piping suitable for a factory, the following factors should be considered comprehensively:
Work Pressure and Flow Requirements: Determine the operating pressure and flow rate of the piping system based on the plant’s actual requirements to ensure that the system can meet the operational demands of various pneumatic tools and equipment.
Corrosion resistance: Select pipeline materials with excellent corrosion resistance to extend service life and reduce maintenance costs.
Installation convenience: Considering the installation difficulty and time cost of piping, select a piping type that is easy to install and commission.
Economic Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness: On the premise of meeting performance requirements, select a cost-effective pipeline type by comprehensively considering factors such as pipeline material costs, operation and maintenance expenses, and service life.
When selecting compressed-air piping for industrial plants, new aluminum-alloy pipes stand out thanks to their safety, corrosion resistance, ease of installation, aesthetic appeal, and excellent cost-effectiveness. Of course, in practical applications, the selection and configuration must be tailored to the specific conditions of each plant. We hope Kimair’s analysis will provide you with valuable guidance and assistance in choosing the right compressed-air piping system.
